The Galician cartoonist Miguelanxo Prado, one of the references of the ninth art in Spain, will be presenting Guillermo Fesser’s book Marcelo and talking with this author about the role that thousands of migrants of Hispanic origin played in the USA during the 50s and 60s.

The migrants were and are key pieces to build the country of opportunities, crucial moreover, in one of the most vertebrating sectors -the hospitality industry. Marcelo looks from the eyes of its protagonist, the Ecuadorian Marcelo Hernandez, bartender in one of the most emblematic places of the New York’s Grand Central Station.

Began as a journalist in the innovative radio program Gomaespuma, which, using humor to tell the news, remained on the air for more than 20 years and reached a million daily followers. Together with his brother, film director Javier Fesser, he has written screenplays for renowned feature films, such as The Miracle of P. Tinto, and directed exciting films such as Cándida and The Invisible Monster. Fesser is the author of several successful books, among them, the biography of his assistant, Candida: cuando Dios aprieta, ahoga pero bien; or the story about daily life in the United States, One Hundred Miles from Manhattan. His children’s books, Ruedas y el enigma del Campamento MT and Get to know Bernardo de Gálvez are regularly read in the classrooms of many schools in Spain and the US.

Fesser currently lives in Rhinebeck, New York, where he works as a correspondent for the television program El Intermedio and directs, together with his college friend and inseparable microphone partner, Juan Luis Cano, the Gomaespuma Foundation. Under the slogan “Pequeños proyectos pero que se hagan” (Small Projects, but that Must Be Done), the foundation is dedicated to educating the most disadvantaged children with a smile and today has projects in Ukraine, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Senegal, Nicaragua and Spain.

His latest project is called Marcelo, a novel based on the biography of the bartender of the renowned Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station in New York, which has just been published in Spain by Contraluz.

The Galician cartoonist Miguelanxo Prado is one of the indisputable referents of the ninth art in Spain.

He received the National Comic Prize 2013 for his work Ardalén, in which he explores memories and memory. Trazo de tiza is the title of one of his most awarded works. Creator of animated TV characters, such as the distinctive Xabarín and his gang, from the TVG program Xabarín Club, he also worked in the USA drawing the series Men in Black, produced by Steven Spielberg.

One of his most personal projects is De Profundis, his first animated feature film made with oil paintings from more than 10,000 drawings, a tribute to the sea, omnipresent in his work. Four years of work that earned him a Goya nomination in 2007 in the animation category.

Since 1998 he has directed the International Comic Festival Viñetas desde o Atlántico, held every August in his hometown, A Coruña.
